Glaskeller's extraction ECR column

Extraction ECR Column

GlasKeller’s ECR Extraction Columns are designed to deliver efficient, reliable liquid–liquid separation across a wide range of laboratory and pilot‑scale processes. Made from high‑quality borosilicate glass, the ECR columns give users full visibility of mixing zones, phase behaviour, and interface control—making it an ideal tool for method development, process refinement and scale-up.  With modular configurations and a choice of internals, the ECR platform supports everything from small‑scale testing to process development and scale‑up. The result is a flexible, user‑friendly system tailored to demanding extraction applications.

  • Ideal for scale‑up – Direct visibility of dispersion, droplet formation, and interface behaviour supports accurate translation from lab to pilot scale.

  • High mass‑transfer efficiency – Optimised geometry and selectable internals ensure controlled dispersion and effective phase contact.

  • Modular, application‑driven design – Multiple column sizes and internals allow precise tuning for specific solvent systems and flow regimes

Mixing chamber and controlled stirer in ECR extraction column

The ECR Extraction Column works by creating controlled contact between two immiscible liquid phases, allowing solutes to transfer from one phase to the other. Depending on the chosen internals—such as sieve plates, structured packing, or other dispersion elements—the column promotes efficient droplet formation and consistent mass‑transfer conditions. Users can easily observe dispersion quality, coalescence behaviour, and interface stability through the glass body, enabling rapid optimisation of flow rates, phase ratios, and operating conditions.

Designed for Process Development

The ECR column enables detailed analysis of the hydrodynamic and mass‑transfer phenomena that define extraction performance. By allowing direct observation of droplet formation, dispersion stability, holdup, and coalescence behaviour, the system supports quantitative evaluation of operating parameters such as phase ratios, flow regimes, and internals selection. This level of insight helps researchers establish reliable design correlations and operating windows that translate effectively to pilot‑ and production‑scale extraction equipment.

ECR Extraction Columns are used across a wide range of industries where precise liquid–liquid separation is essential. Typical applications include solvent extraction in fine‑chemical synthesis, purification of intermediates, natural product isolation, hydrometallurgical separations, and process development for pharmaceutical and specialty‑chemical workflows. Their modular design and clear visibility make them equally suited for academic research, industrial R&D labs, and pilot facilities working to optimise or validate extraction processes.
